New baby quotes: short, modern, for a girl or a boy

New baby quotes to copy into a card: short and modern lines, quotes for a baby girl or a baby boy, a Bible verse, and wording for your own birth announcement.

Sometimes all that's missing is the first line. The card is ready, so is the pen, and you know exactly what you want to say: that you're happy, that you're thinking of the family, that this tiny person is welcome. But how do you start without sounding like every other card?

For exactly that moment I've collected new baby quotes here. I wrote them myself and sorted them by tone and occasion: short, modern, for a girl, for a boy, with a wink or with a little more depth. Pick one, change it, add the baby's name. If you'd rather know how to build a whole card and what's better left out, that's in my piece on new baby wishes.

Short new baby quotes

Short lines fit on a gift tag, under a photo in the family chat, or on a small card with room for little more than your signature.

  • "Hello, little human. So glad you're here."
  • "Welcome to the world and right into our hearts."
  • "Ten fingers, ten toes and so much love."
  • "Arrived small, loved big."
  • "A new name we'll be saying a lot from now on."
  • "There are three of you now. How lovely."
  • "The wait was worth it."

A short quote works best with the name in it. "Hello, Ida. So glad you're here" feels completely different from the version without a name.

Modern new baby quotes

Many parents today like things simple and honest, without angels and rhymes. Modern lines sound more like the way you'd actually say it:

"Congratulations on the smallest flatmate you've ever had."

"From today your life is louder, messier and so much better."

"Clearly the most important appointment of the year was this one."

"New family, new nights, new love. We're so happy for you."

"He's here. We can't wait to meet him, whenever it suits you."

That last line is a favourite of mine. It says you'd love to visit but leaves the when to the parents.

Quotes for a baby girl

For a girl it doesn't have to be princesses and pink. I like lines that give the child something for her life:

  • "Welcome, little Lotta. May the world make as much room for you as you need."
  • "A daughter has arrived. We wish her courage, curiosity and always someone who listens."
  • "So small and already so much herself. Congratulations on your daughter."
  • "May she laugh out loud, dream wildly and always know where home is."
  • "A warm welcome, Emma. We're looking forward to everything you'll become."

If you like, you can address the line to the parents instead: "We wish your daughter …" sounds a little more formal, "Dear Emma, …" more personal.

Quotes for a baby boy

The same goes for boys: he doesn't have to be a little hero or a future footballer. A few lines without the clichés:

  • "Welcome, little Paul. May your life be as warm as the arms you're lying in now."
  • "A son has arrived. We wish him a soft heart and strong friends."
  • "Hello, Jonas. The world is big, but you're not alone in it."
  • "May he be allowed to wonder, to make mistakes and always to find his way back."
  • "Congratulations on your son. We can't wait to see who he takes after."

Lovely quotes with a little more depth

For grandparents, godparents or close friends it can be more emotional. These work well in a larger card, followed by a few lines of your own:

"A child doesn't only change their parents' lives. It changes how you see the world. We hope you keep that sense of wonder for a long time."

"Today a story begins that nobody knows the end of. We're looking forward to being there for a few of its pages."

"You're not even a day old and already have so many people who love you. That's a good start."

If the family is religious, a Bible verse fits too. One I particularly like for a birth is Psalm 139:14 (King James Version):

"I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well."

Funny new baby quotes

Humour is lovely as long as it doesn't land on the parents. I'd use it sparingly and skip jokes about sleep deprivation, new parents hear those constantly anyway. These ones work, I think:

  • "Congratulations! You now officially have someone who watches you eat."
  • "Welcome to the team. The boss is small but very determined."
  • "Congratulations on the family member with the loudest vote."
  • "Finally someone who finds your jokes funny. Well, soon."

Lines for your own birth announcement

If you've just become parents yourselves, you're often looking for a line for the card to family and friends. Then the quote can come from the baby or from you:

  • "Here I am. And I'm staying."
  • "We're three now and endlessly grateful."
  • "Small, loud and completely ours."
  • "He was in a hurry, and we're so happy."

For these cards: name, date, time, length and weight belong on them. A quote rounds them off but doesn't replace the numbers everyone is waiting for.

How a quote becomes personal

A ready-made quote is a start. It becomes personal through one sentence after it that could only come from you: a memory from the pregnancy, a wish that suits the parents, or simply an offer. "I'll bring you soup next week" is, for many new parents, the best line on the whole card.

One more small thing: write by hand, even if your handwriting isn't pretty. Parents keep these cards. Many end up in a box with the first socks and the hospital bracelet. How to keep things like that well is in my piece on milk teeth, umbilical cord and the first curl.

Cards where the quote belongs

In my workshop in Bergisch Gladbach I make two cards for this occasion. The folded card for a birth is meant for parents who want to introduce their baby: the front shows the name, date of birth, time, length and weight, with a header you choose above it, for example "Willkommen auf der Welt" (welcome to the world) or "Schön, dass du da bist" (so glad you are here). The printed text is German and the inside is blank for your quote. It's A6 and costs €4.90 on white paper or €5.90 on grass paper, €2 more each with a matching envelope.

For congratulating, there's the occasion card "Zur Geburt" (On the birth). It reads "So klein und schon mitten im Herzen" (so small and already right in our hearts), with a tiny romper on the birch plywood tile and "Schön, dass du da bist." (So glad you are here.) below. It's €4.90 without engraving, €9.90 with the child's name along the curve at the bottom of the tile.

And if you'd like a present next to the card where all these cards can later live: the keepsake box "Woodland animals" is a wooden box measuring 29 × 19 × 13 cm. On the lid I engrave a stag and a fawn, your baby's name, date of birth, time, length, weight and a line of your choice, for example "So sehr geliebt" (so very loved). It costs €39.95.

And if none of the quotes feels quite right: just write the baby's name and "We're so happy for you". Sometimes that's all it takes.
